There are between 20-60 deaths a year from unintentional carbon monoxide poisoning. You can drastically reduce the occurrence of this in your home or business by installing CO detectors on your alarm system. These are usually placed near places in the building where CO might begin to build up and usually outside of bedrooms.

If you use a combustible gas then you can protect yourself from leaks by installing a combustible gas detector near holding tanks or lines. These can also be used along with central station monitoring, as they are life safety devices, to call in help if there's an emergency.
